SINGAPORE: Underneath all the violence, bloodshed and machismo in Hong Kong director Benny Chan's "Shaolin" is an endearing tale of a man's journey in search of redemption. "Shaolin" is Chan's update of the 1982 release "The Shaolin Temple", the film that put Chinese action superstar Jet Li - who was just 17 at the time - on the path to greatness. But instead of being an all out action fest like its predecessor, which saw Li take revenge on his father's killers with an amazing array of Shaolin martial arts moves, Chan's "Shaolin" focuses more on the changes that occur within its main characters though it still retains a healthy amount of action. In "Shaolin", which is set in China's warlord era just before the fall of the Chinese imperial court, the arrogant warlord Hou Jie (Andy Lau) – the main protagonist of the tale – devises an assassination plot against another warlor...
