With such a small margin, the Returning Officer allowed a recount, bringing Singapore's second presidential election to a conclusion only at 4.25am - more than eight hours after polls closed. In the end, just over one-third - 35.2 per cent - of 2.1 million voters threw their support behind the former deputy prime minister who had campaigned on the platform that his would be a pair of steady and experienced hands in carrying out the President's custodial functions.
