But despite losing by the slimmest of margins, there was some consolation. He said: 'Even though I only lost by 0.34 per cent, less than half a per cent, we have to follow our British system, first past the post. So we lost, but we also won. I have given you a chance to take part in a presidential election. Very important because for too long, no elections. So now I hope this election has set Singaporeans thinking, the responsibility in choosing somebody they like, not somebody they endorse, so this is something I find quite good.'
