The Brunei Times Monday, Aug 29, 2011 SOCIAL media power has come to the fore that Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron, following the rampage in London, said that not only was his government considering banning people from using social media if they were suspected of causing disorder. He was reported to have asked the police whether they needed any new powers to stop the violence, including the ability to shut down social networks or communications services like BlackBerry's if they believe these were used to incite unrest. Take this idea out of context and plant it in a repressive regime. Alarming. (Luckily, in a meeting last Thursday, British officials told representatives of Facebook, Twitter and BlackBerry that they will not restrict social media use during times of chaos.)
