Japan's finance minister Noda elected party chief, to become next PM

TOKYO - Japan's Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda was elected head of the centre-left ruling party on Monday and therefore set to become the country's sixth new prime minister in five years. Noda gained 215 votes in the second-round ballot of the Democratic Party of Japan against the trade and industry minister Banri Kaieda, who won 177 out of the 392 valid lawmakers' votes. The other contender in the run-off vote was Trade and Industry Minister Banri Kaieda. The run-off comes after all five candidates of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) failed to win a clear majority in the first round of voting to determine their third leader since they took power two years ago. 54-year-old Noda, a fiscal hawk, is known more as a safe pair of hands than a bold visionary, and in a recent essay praised the virtues of "middle-of-the-road" leadership.
