(TODAY) HSA suspends 14 retail tobacco licences

SINGAPORE - The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) has suspended the tobacco licences of 14 errant tobacco sellers for selling tobacco to underage youth. They were prosecuted and convicted between March and July and their licences will be suspended for six months, from Sep 1 to Feb 29, 2012. Two of the 14 licensees cancelled their licences before the suspension was to take effect, and they will not be able to sell tobacco products or apply for a new tobacco retail licence during the six-month period. Under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act, anyone caught selling tobacco products to those under 18 can be fined up to S$5,000 for the first offence and up to S$10,000 for the second or subsequent offence.
