#Olympics #PingPong Tony Tan gets almost 40% of overseas votes - Straits Times

FOR 12 years, Singaporeans have looked up to President S R Nathan with trust and respect. They trusted him because they could depend on him to exercise his custodial powers under the Constitution with their interests in mind. Respect came from his ability, nurtured during long years as a labour activist, senior civil servant and diplomat, to understand where those interests actually lay. Internationally, he was the face of Singapore, an urbane and soft-spoken man who possessed, nevertheless, a steely knowledge of the global realities that determined Singapore's survival. Nationally, he earned respect because of his down-to-earth nature, his unaffected bearing, and his ability to talk to a taxi driver the way he would to a CEO.
