Sports sponsorship hits record S$72m in 2010

SINGAPORE : The Singapore Sports Council said sports sponsorship in Singapore hit a record S$72 million last year, due in part to the country staging the inaugural Youth Olympic Games. And although the Singapore Sports Council feels this exceptional figure will not be matched in 2011, it still expects the upward trend to continue. An indication of that is that sponsorship increased almost 20 per cent - from S$25 million in 2008 to S$31 million in 2009. The Singapore sports scene has seen accelerated growth over the last few years, resulting in many taking a greater interest in and placing greater importance on sports, according to the Singapore Sports Council. Similarly, sponsorship of local athletes and events has grown. A prime example is table tennis, which signed several sponsors, totalling more than S$2 million in 2010.
