HK pet shops boost rabbit stock

HONG KONG : As the Year of the Rabbit approaches, pet shops in Hong Kong are boosting their stock of the animals, expecting more sales. Some believe it will be lucky to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit by owning one. And shops expect this will mean bouncing bunny business. Kit Chan, manager of "I Love Rabbit" shop, said: "As it's the Year of the Rabbit, some will like to buy one for the occasion. Rabbits are small and cute, so people want to get one as a pet." Pet shops expect many people will be eager to add a new furry friend to their home for the new year. But animal welfare groups are concerned the trend could result in rabbits being abandoned. The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) takes in abandoned animals, including rabbits, and puts them up for adoption.
