53,057 S'poreans checked names in Registers of Electors

SINGAPORE : Some 53,057 Singaporeans have checked their names in the Registers of Electors. The registers closed on Thursday, with 69 claims and 13 objections received. Claims are filed with the Registration Officer by anyone who considers himself qualified to be an elector as on January 1 but does not find his name in the correct Register of Electors or in any Register of Electors. Objections are filed with the Registration Officer by an elector to object to the inclusion of his name or another person's name in a Register of Electors of the same constituency as his. The Elections Department said the registers will be certified when all the claims and objections are processed. It has not given a date for this. 287 citizens have applied for the restoration of non-voters' names.
