Indonesians recovering from Merapi eruption last Oct - Channel News Asia

MAGELANG, Central Java : Residents living near Indonesia's Mount Merapi are still recovering from its devastating eruption last October. But work has already begun to prepare them for future eruptions. The initiatives are started by Mercy Relief - a Singapore humanitarian outfit. And the work is becoming increasingly critical, as experts predict the volcano may erupt every 4 to 5 years. Last October when Mount Merapi erupted, the Dukun District Clinic - a government clinic situated near the volcano - turned away hundreds of patients with respiratory problems because it had only one respirator. "Most got allergies because of bacteria and heat, but mainly because of Merapi's ash. During the eruption, many people suffered throat infection which caused choking and breathlessness," said Dr Edi Suharso, head of the Dukun District Clinic.
