SINGAPORE - In a move to steer schools towards an education system that is more student-centric, the Ministry of Education (MOE) will move away from a results-oriented culture, to practices that are more "holistic and balanced", said Minister for Education Heng Swee Keat. At the MOE Work Plan Seminar this morning, Mr Heng said that since he became Education Minister, many parents and educators have asked him to place a greater emphasis on character-building among the children. Some were also concerned about whether children and teachers can cope with the "excessive competition and stress" of the education system here, he said. To achieve a more student-centric culture, a review will be conducted to determine which practices are too achievements-driven, as well as those which generate too much administrative work, bogging down the teachers.
