SINGAPORE : Immigration offences are at a 10-year low, with fewer foreigners arrested for immigration offences in 2010 as compared to a decade ago. In its annual report, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said the total number of foreigners arrested for immigration offences last year fell by 23 per cent to 4,260. The number of people arrested for harbouring or employing the illegal foreigners have also fallen by 4 per cent and 48 per cent respectively. ICA said the continuous decline in the immigration arrest numbers was a testament to its efforts in safeguarding Singapore's borders and keeping the undesirables from entering the country. But contraband smuggling detections climbed 28 per cent to record high 67,600 cases, due to stepped up checks at the checkpoints. One in four cases involved contraband cigarettes.
