TAIPEI: It is a tradition for Taiwan companies to hold year-end banquets, or weiya, before the Lunar New Year to reward their employees. How much a company is willing to spend on the dinner party usually reflects how well the company did for the year. And it seems that many employers are feeling generous this year. With 2010 being a good year for various industries in Taiwan, many companies are throwing lavish dinner parties to reward their employees for a year of hard work. The technology sector forms the backbone of Taiwan's exports, and they are among the biggest spenders. Many reported record sales for 2010, thanks to strong global demand for consumer electronics. One of the companies, a smartphone maker, gave out bonuses of as much as 20 months salary.
