BlackBerry-maker risks Indian ban

NEW DELHI - BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) could be kicked out of India, one of the world's fastest-growing mobile markets, after the government refused to accept 11th-hour security concessions on access to users' emails and messages. India on Monday rejected an offer from RIM which would have given it partial access to the country's 400,000 BlackBerry users' messages and email. It is the latest instalment in a three-year struggle in which the government has sought to be able to read communications to BlackBerry devices, citing security fears and claims that they were used in the 2008 Mumbai killings. India's Home Affairs Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram said yesterday that the government still wanted access to BlackBerry users' corporate emails, which RIM has consistently stated is technically impossible.
