SINGAPORE : Lunar New Year celebrations took place in an unlikely setting on Wednesday. The Sri Mariamman Temple hosted some 120 senior citizens from the Kreta Ayer Senior Citizens Activity Centre and Pelangi Village to a vegetarian reunion lunch. There were the customary gifts of Mandarin oranges, a lion dance and sing-alongs in Hokkien. This is the eighth year the temple is hosting a lunch for the elderly. Joining them was MP for Marine Parade GRC, Dr Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim. The elderly also received red packets or hongbaos. The temple, located at South Bridge Road, said the event is its way of being part of Lunar New Year celebrations.
