US inmates challenge importation of execution drug via @cmswire

WASHINGTON - SIX death row prisoners claim in a new lawsuit that the US government has allowed what they argue is the illegal importation of a drug used for executions, according to their lawyers. Thiopental, an anesthetic that eliminates pain during the administration of two other drugs in lethal injection executions, is out of stock in the United States. The only company that produced thiopental on American soil announced Jan 21 that it permanently stopped production. The complaint, which had not yet been formally recorded Wednesday in a federal court in Washington, requests that the US Food and Drug Administration be held responsible for violating the law by not stopping states from importing thiopental from Europe last fall. 'The FDA has knowingly allowed the states of Arizona, California, and Tennessee to import bulk amounts of the drug thiopental,' claims the lawsuit...
