Several universities in Cairo will be closed for a few months in the wake of the social unrest in Egypt. The Higher Education Ministry here was informed of the closure by three universities -- Al-Azhar University has declared a year off while Ain Shams University and University of Cairo will be closed for six, and three months, respectively. Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Khaled Nordin said there were 11,319 students studying in the republic -- 5,184 medical students and 6,135 pursuing Islamic studies. "To ensure the safety of students there, the ministry's Malaysian Students Department in Cairo has designated several safe houses, including the Malaysia Abbasiyah Hall, state government houses in Cairo, and Mara house in Alexandria.
