WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain, once rivals for the presidency, have met privately at the White House for a wide-ranging discussion on topics from deficit reduction to the Middle East to immigration. McCain says he looks forward to further discussions with the president. Aides said the meeting Wednesday between the two former presidential rivals was not their first since the 2008 election but was the one that stuck most closely to issues of mutual interest. They have had a frosty relationship since the campaign. The meeting between Obama and McCain illustrates the political repositioning by both the president and the senator in the aftermath of the 2010 midterm elections. Outreach between the two came after the Arizona shooting spree that seriously wounded congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords last month.
