3 killed after tropical storm hits southern China
BEIJING (AFP) - Three people in southern China have died after a powerful tropical storm triggered flooding, toppled houses and damaged farmland, state media said on Sunday. The storm, which weakened from a typhoon after devastating the Philippines' main island of Luzon last week, has caused about US$219 million (S$286 million) in economic losses in Guangxi region, the official Xinhua news agency said. Three villagers were killed after their homes collapsed or were washed away in heavy downpours in Lingshan county, Xinhua said. The water level of five rivers in the area had exceeded danger levels by early on Sunday, the report said, citing local flood control officials.
