I refer to the Sept 21 report that chronic diseases are on the rise and that two in five Singaporeans aged 20 and above have diabetes, high blood pressure or high cholesterol as well as the letter "Prevent chronic illness through better tobacco control" (Sept 27), which stated that smokers typically have a higher proportion of abdominal obesity. This strikes a chord because it highlights the importance of addressing the issue of obesity. Obesity increases the risk of multiple medical conditions, many of which are associated with high morbidity and mortality, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and coronary heart disease. In fact, obesity is the most prevalent precursor of Type 2 diabetes. Conversely, the risks associated with these conditions may be reduced with even a modest weight loss.
