ISCHL, Austria (AP) - Retired Swiss ski star Paul Accola has been mistaken for a thief who stole a pair of expensive skis while walking through an Austrian resort. Austrian media on Friday reported that three police officers arrested a man carrying skis but not wearing ski boots. What police didn't know was that he was the 1992 overall World Cup champion. Accola was not carrying any ID. He was taken to a police office, where he was cleared as soon as another police officer recognized him. Accola won seven World Cup races and a bronze medal at the 1988 Calgary Olympics. He was in Ischl for a charity skiing event, which also included past rival Marc Girardelli of Luxembourg. Police say ski theft is a major problem in the resort.
