UNITED NATIONS - UN leader Ban Ki-moon called Friday on the Myanmar military to use the naming of a new government to open up to opposition parties, his spokesman said. The military named a retired general, Thein Sein, as president on Friday after a new national assembly, dominated by allies of the ruling generals, sat for the first time this week. Ban has "taken note" of the announcement of the election of the new president and vice presidents, said spokesman, Farhan Haq, in a statement. "The secretary general hopes that this announcement marks the beginning of a change in the status quo. It represents an important opportunity for Myanmar. "He hopes that it leads to the formation of a more inclusive civilian government that is broadly representative of all parties relevant to national reconciliation and more responsive to the aspirations of the people of Myanmar."
