Malaysia PM moves to repeal security laws

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's premier scheduled motions in parliament on Monday to repeal two tough laws as part of his recent promise to strip away or soften legislation from the country's authoritarian past. Najib Razak, who is widely tipped to call snap elections within months, last month unexpectedly announced plans to do away with oppressive laws including the dreaded Internal Security Act (ISA). The government has indicated repeal of the ISA -- which allows virtually indefinite detention without trial -- would be begun next year, but Najib on Monday launched motions to scrap two lesser laws often criticised as heavy-handed. They are the 1933 Restricted Residence Act, which allows police to require a person to live in a certain area or to bar them from an area, and the 1959 Banishment Act, which allows non-Malaysians to be banished from the country.
