SINGAPORE - The telecommunications industry will look to derive revenue from cloud-based infrastructure, as take-up rates for new phone subscribers decrease. Cloud infrastructure allows companies to access and store data at a low cost on the Internet. About 20 per cent of all desktops are set to be virtualised in 10 years, according to research house IDC Asia, which would create opportunities for telcos to host the virtualised desktops on these "cloud" Internet servers, instead of the local network or PCs. Mr Adrian Dominic Ho, principal at IDC Asia Pacific, said: "So telcos will be enhancing their cloud capabilities delivering a lot of applications, delivering a lot of compute as well as a lot of infrastructure over the cloud that's a big game changer for them."
