US stocks edge higher before weekend

NEW YORK - Wall Street stocks struggled higher Friday as the turmoil in Egypt continued for an 11th day and US job indicators gave a confusing picture of the economy's direction. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 29.89 points (0.25 percent) at 12,092.15, while the S&P 500 rose 3.77 (0.29 percent) at 1,310.87. The Nasdaq advanced 15.42 points (0.56 percent) at 2,769.30. There was little clear news to set a direction for traders after a government update on jobs said that a low 36,000 nonfarm jobs were created in January, far fewer than the 148,000 expected. Meanwhile the government also reported that the unemployment rate fell to 9.0 percent of the workforce from 9.4 percent. Normally such a sizable decline in the jobless rate would spur great optimism over the country's economic recovery -- the rate has been above nine percent for 22 months. But the figure was qua...
