Filipino workers encouraged to be entrepreneurs

MANILA: The Philippines has just launched a special loan programme for overseas Filipino workers to encourage them to start their own businesses, in the hope it will provide an economic alternative to overseas employment. Ricardo Marinduque had been working as a seaman for 15 years when he decided to set up his own fitness center in 2005. He borrowed US$4,500 from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration to buy gym equipment. Ricardo admits it took quite some time for business to pick up, but he persisted. The owner of Stamina Fitness Center said: "It was very hard. There was a time that I thought the business would fail because I did not know much about it. Because this is my hobby, I attended seminars to learn more about it. "I am encouraging my fellow overseas Filipino workers to set up even just a small business so that they can be with their families here." Six yea...
