We need a society that respects the worker on the shop floor as much as the chairman in the board room, says our reader.

THE Insight article on Sept 24 ('Shrinking population, growing problems') reminded me of my conversation with a friend recently in the United States. He works at an aircraft parts manufacturer and shared with me that there were three people over 80 years old working with him, and quite a number of others over 70 years old. What surprised me was that one of the octogenarians was not a senior executive, as one would expect, but a shop-floor supervisor. This man has four adult children who can support him, but chose to continue working simply because he liked what he did. Therein lies the difference. Although this man could retire, he is still working because he enjoys what he does; he has done his job for over 40 years and is recognised for it. Singaporeans are encouraged to continue working past age 62. My sense is that many will choose to retire if they can afford to do so...
