Should long-serving maids be allowed to apply for PR in Singapore?

HONG Kong's landmark court ruling which allows long-serving maids to apply for permanent residency is worrying and should not be considered by Singapore ('Doubts and fears in HK over green light for maids' PR'; yesterday). It may open the floodgates for a potential influx of migrants from under-developed countries to developed nations, and damage the latter's economic, social and even, cultural fabric. The apparent basis for the successful lobbying was human rights; that all human beings should be accorded equal opportunity by any nation, regardless of whether the applicant concerned was a maid or a professional. This concept of human rights, if applied indiscriminately, can be dangerous. Singapore is small, with limited land and resources.
