SEARCHING for a rental apartment is an absolute nightmare in Singapore. The Council for Estate Agencies (CEA) and Institute of Estate Agents (IEA) do not regulate commissions and as a result, agents have exploited the lack of rules with impunity. I was recently fooled into paying one month's rent in commission for a two-year lease deal at $3,500 a month. That's just on the tenant's side. The landlord is also paying his agent one month's rent. Not a bad hourly pay for maybe two days of work. Shame on me for not reading the small print, but good faith often gets punished. When will the CEA and IEA step in to regulate this?
