A man swimming in an Australian waterhole fought off a giant crocodile by punching it in the head.

SYDNEY - A MAN swimming in an Australian waterhole with his two daughters fought off a giant crocodile by punching it in the head, reports said on Sunday. The family were swimming at Beening Creek near Weipa, on Australia's far north-eastern tip, when a 2.5 metre crocodile snapped its jaws onto the man's hand and arm, puncturing his skin. He managed to fight the reptile off by punching it repeatedly in the snout before dragging himself to land, local media reported. 'The wounds are not life threatening,' police said. An average of two people are killed each year in Australia by saltwater crocodiles, known locally as 'salties", which can grow up to seven metres long and weigh more than a tonne. -- AFP
