Going green also helps companies cut costs: Green efforts must make economic sense to businesses for them to be

By Gwendolyn Ng my paper Thursday, Oct 06, 2011 You may not have noticed, but the aluminium cans of beer like Tiger and Heineken have been thinner since the start of last year. The ecological move by Asia Pacific Breweries (APB), the owner of both brands, was not only meant to reduce waste, but also to help the company save $25,000 annually. "Aluminium prices are rising, so it makes sense to cut costs while saving the environment," said Mr Shue Toh Ting, APB's efficiency controller. The initiative received a 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) Packaging Award yesterday from Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan. Green efforts must make economic sense to businesses for them to be sustainable, Dr Balakrishnan said at the Regional 3R Forum in Asia at Sheraton Towers.
