Not wise to have education system only focused on university track, says Minister of State for Education Lawrence Wong

SINGAPORE - In chairing a new committee to study different pathways to university education, Minister of State for Education Lawrence Wong said several key principles have been identified. Speaking at the UniSIM convocation ceremony this morning, he said that diversity and healthy competition should be encouraged in the expanded university sector. He said it is not 'realistic' to expect all universities here to excel in teaching every discipline. Mr Wong also acknowledged that not every student is suited to an academically-intensive learning environment. Some would prefer the more 'practice-based' polytechnic route. "After the diploma, they can still consider the university option later, or they can work first and then get their degrees later...there are advantages to doing this.
