On Feb 4, a major two-hour clash between Thai and Cambodian troops along their common border erupted, resulting in a Thai villager and a Cambodian soldier killed. While this was not the first cross-border flare-up, it signals a rapid deterioration in Thai-Cambodian relations. The rise of anti-Cambodia sentiment in Thailand has reached an alarming level. On Dec 29 last year, seven Thais, including one Member of Parliament from the ruling Democrat Party, Mr Panich Vikitsreth, were arrested by the Cambodian border guards. They were accused of encroaching on Cambodia's territory and locked up in a Phnom Penh jail. Three weeks later, Cambodia's court decided to set free the five Thais on suspended sentences and fine them one million riel ($316) each for illegally entering Cambodia.
