Perth area declared a disaster zone

PERTH - Western Australia's State Premier, Mr Colin Barnett, yesterday declared an area near the state capital of Perth a natural disaster zone after a bush fire raging out of control on the fringes of the city destroyed at least 41 homes and damaged another 19 structures. One fire-fighter was injured and several people treated for smoke inhalation. Fire-fighters are close to stopping the spread of that wildfire and another that broke out over the weekend in the same area of Western Australia state. The two blazes have razed 1,600 hectares of forested land to the north and south-east of Perth since Saturday, according to Fire and Emergency Services Authority spokesman (FESA) Alan Gale. The fire in the Roleystone and Kelmscott areas was started accidentally when a man using an electric grinder in his backyard ignited dry grass with sparks. Residents who were evacuated from ...
