Reputation not tarnished despite fraud, says NUS

SINGAPORE: The National University of Singapore (NUS) believes its reputation will not be tarnished by suspicions that a former academic had fabricated research data. It was recently reported that a scientific paper authored by Dr Alirio Melendez and his collaborators was retracted after major conclusions in the paper could not be supported by the data presented. In a statement, the university's deputy president of research and technology, Professor Barry Halliwell, said "almost all, if not all" world-leading universities have experienced cases like this. "Although we are sad that this has happened at NUS, we feel that the reputation of NUS will not be seriously damaged since we have handled the case according to best international practice," Prof Halliwell said.
