Euro steady after Slovakia rejects eurozone rescue

NEW YORK: The euro was stable against the US dollar on Tuesday after Slovak lawmakers rejected expansion of a eurozone emergency fund, raising the possibility it could be approved under a new government. The euro was at $1.3636 around 2100 GMT, barely changed from $1.3645 at the same time Monday. The shared European currency was also stable against the Japanese yen, at 104.52 yen compared with 104.60 late Monday. The dollar moved little against the yen, at 76.65 yen, a tick lower than the 76.67 it fetched the prior day. The euro had an "extremely quiet" day after hitting $1.3699 on Monday, its highest level since September 21, said Nomura analyst Charles St-Arnaud. The euro weakened only slightly after the Slovak parliament voted on Tuesday against changes to expand the eurozone rescue fund, known as the European Financial Stability Facility.
