SINGAPORE - The rise of Internet use in all aspects of daily life has led to a corresponding increase in cybercrime prevalence. The long-held perception of hackers being lone nerds working out of basements is also outdated. Hacker groups like LulzSec who do it "for the lulz" or the notoriety are in fact becoming a minority. These days, much of cybercrime has far more sinister motives behind it. "In the nineties, it was motivated by fame. People did it out of fun. But from the early 2000s it became more financially motivated. There is a lot of money involved," said Mr Pavel Luka, chief technology officer of ESET, a global provider of security solutions for businesses and consumers.
