Online Only - A season for victors and sporting students, too

SINGAPORE - Following a year that featured some scenes of poor sportsmanship, the school sports season kicked off yesterday with a new incentive for fair play, to go with the addition of two core sports on the competition list and the creation of more recreational sports events. Different models for Good Sportsmanship Awards are being piloted by the Singapore Schools' Sports Council and the Singapore Primary Schools' Sports Council, to promote respect for players and officials. For instance, in rugby competitions, which in some cases last year ended with trash talking and even physical assault, each game will now end with these awards being presented to players. In the Sepak Takraw Zone Championships for primary schools, the organisers are planning for each participating school to nominate one senior and one junior player to the organising committee for awards to be given ...
