SINGAPORE: To mark World Sight Day on Thursday, some 250 Singapore senior citizens on public assistance will have their eyes screened. They will be screened for common eye problems at no charge by the optometry departments of Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore Polytechnic and Manchester University Singapore. Those who are diagnosed with poor vision from uncorrected refractive errors will be prescribed free spectacles by Optometry Giving Sight Singapore, a non-governmental organisation, in collaboration with its industry partners. Those with other problems such as cataract, macular degeneration and glaucoma will be referred to their nearest polyclinics. The underprivileged seniors are mainly from North East Community Development Council (CDC) and North West CDC and the Health Promotion Board has endorsed this initiative.
