Degree programmes to encourage nursing as top career choice

SINGAPORE - A nursing career is often perceived as having lower status in Singapore, unlike in countries such as the United Kingdom and United States, according to Professor Karen Luker, dean of the School of Nursing Midwifery and Social Work at the University of Manchester. But all this could change with the introduction of more nursing degree programmes, she said yesterday. And at the signing ceremony to mark a collaboration between the Singapore Institute of Technology and the University of Manchester (UOM) to offer a nursing degree programme from August, Prof Luker said that degree programmes can even elevate nursing to become a top career option here for "intelligent young people".
