Singapore - The first sitting of Singapore's 12th Parliament's was kicked off yesterday with a debate on the President's Address. It provided a glimpse of the tone of the debate to be expected and addressing various issues they felt needed to be tackled by the Government. There were calls by MPs to review housing and healthcare policies, in light of Singapore's growing and ageing population. Seven new MPs gave their maiden speeches, offering ways on how the Government could better connect with the people. At the start of the sitting, Mr Charles Chong (Joo Chiat GRC) and Mr Seah Kian Peng (Marine Parade GRC), were elected Deputy Speakers of the House. But it was Workers' Party chairman Sylvia Lim's call for a more holistic economic indicator, one that includes happiness, that sparked a debate.
