Fish spas - where people let tiny fish nibble at their skin - could spread diseases like HIV, Hepatitis C

LONDON - Britain's Health Protection Agency (HPA) warned on Monday that fish spas, where people let dozens of tiny fish nibble the dead skin off from their feet, could spread blood-borne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C. The report, which found a number of micro-organisms in fish-tank water following a six-month review, said that the risk of infection is "extremely low" but added: "There is still a risk of transmission of a number of infections - this does include viruses like HIV and hepatitis." The HPA advises those with weak immune systems or medical conditions such as diabetes, as well as those with cuts on their feet or legs, to avoid the treatment. Those who have just shaved or waxed their legs are also urged to avoid the treatment for at least 24 hours to minimise the chance of contracting an infection.
