Japan will remain key ASEAN partner despite leadership change

SINGAPORE: Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli said he expects Japan to remain a key ASEAN partner despite a recent change in prime minister. Replying to MP for Marine Parade GRC Fatimah Lateef in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Masagos said: "I do not expect this to change irrespective of which personality or which party is in power." Assoc Prof Fatimah had asked for an update on ASEAN-Japan relations and its future directions. She also wanted to know the likelihood of changes in Japan's policy-making strategies and its impact on ASEAN. Mr Masagos, in his reply, said it was significant that after the earthquake and tsunami in Japan this March, ASEAN Foreign Ministers convened a Special ASEAN-Japan Ministerial Meeting on April 9 to express the region's solidarity and commitment to support the Japanese people.
