Opposition MP suggests ways to engage citizens

SINGAPORE: The MP for Aljunied GRC, Pritam Singh, suggested ways in which the government can foster an informed and engaged citizenry, in his maiden speech in Parliament on Thursday. He said some Singaporeans, particularly those in the post-65 generation, have more faith and confidence in the new media, and may even tolerate misinformation or get taken in by disinformation to varying degrees online. "To improve communication with Singaporeans, this PAP government has to work hard to change the perception of its philosophy of indirect control of the mainstream media and deliberately move towards a politics of empowerment when dealing with Singaporeans," said Mr Singh. His comments sparked a debate in the House.
