SABAH: In a report released by Netherlands-based Wetlands International, Malaysia is destroying its forests more than three times faster than all of Asia combined. Most of the forests are being converted into palm oil plantations. Despite the destruction, progress has been made towards sustainable forest management to help minimize the impact of climate change. Since the introduction of commercial logging some 40 years ago, Sabah's forest cover has been reduced from 90 per cent to 60 per cent today. Masidi Manjun, Sabah's Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, said: "I think the issue is really to control human greed. Don't take more than what you need and that's the most challenging part of managing any country anyway." Travelling along the east-coast of Sabah, it is hard to ignore a huge expanse of oil palm crops, areas which were once covered by jungle or forest. So...
