Thailand's worst floods in half a century have arrived in Bangkok

BANGKOK - Thailand's worst floods in half a century arrived in the capital yesterday, as Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra took command of flood control and urged Bangkok residents to get ready to move their belongings to higher ground. The waters, which have submerged a third of Thailand since July, rose to knee-deep levels and entered homes in parts of Bangkok's outer districts. "The water is coming, it's inevitable," said Bangkok Bank employee Mr Oraphin Jungkasemsuk, 40. "They are fighting a massive pool of water. They cannot control it anymore. There are barriers but it can come into the city from any direction, even up through the drains." Ms Yingluck yesterday invoked a natural disaster law, granting her executive powers over state agencies and the military.
