What else can budget airlines skimp on for cheaper fares?

I remember my first budget flight. It was on Valuair, circa February 2005, to Hong Kong. Back then, budget carriers were still a novelty. And for a relatively broke couple trying to save money in order to live it up (sort of) in another city, Valuair offered the best, umm, value. It was relatively affordable, had allocated and surprisingly comfortable seats; and a generous baggage allowance was given. It even provided a complimentary hot meal and drink. I actually recall being rather impressed by the nasi lemak-esque breakfast the attendants handed out on the flight. Of course, if you compare what Valuair had then to what some budget airlines are offering - or rather, not allowing - today, you'd think that the former was a full-service flight (or as, someone said, "glam Pam Am in disguise").
