SINGAPORE: It is estimated that roughly 90 per cent of global trade is carried by ships and since ships are fuelled by diesel, they leave a carbon footprint. Compared with other modes of transportation, ships emit less carbon dioxide. Trucks are estimated to belch out 3 times more carbon than cargo ships, while aircraft are 36 times more polluting. However, the shipping industry wants to further reduce its carbon footprint. Experts said that with its low sulphur content, LNG has the potential to be an environmentally friendly and viable alternative to marine-fuel oil, particularly for short hauls. Thor Jorgen Guttormsen, President of the Norwegian Shipowners' Association, said: "I think in Norway we see more and more LNG powered vessels especially on ferries, and on offshore vessels and I think it has to do with two factors; one is environmental factors - green house gases...
