'Thai floods may last 6 more weeks': Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra

BANGKOK - Thailand's catastrophic floods may take up to six weeks to recede, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said yesterday, as the government scrambled to protect the capital and defend two industrial zones from flooding. The diversion of floodwater that reached levels as high as three metres on Bangkok's fringe provinces appeared to be working for now, although some spilled into the capital's northern districts, forcing hundreds into evacuation centres. So far, most of Bangkok has escaped unharmed, and its two airports are operating normally. Residents are preparing for the worst, though, after Ms Yingluck urged all residents to move valuables to higher ground. A mild panic prompted a run on grocery stores, with many running out of bottled water.
